Prometheus (2012)

Saw this a week or two back, at Imax, didn't care to write about it at the time, but i will now, because we have the technology!
So, Prometheus, Directed by Sir Ridley Scott, is the somewhat awaited prequel to his Horror/Sci-fi classic 'Alien' he Directed some thirty one years ago(?), about the search for the origins of the human race, and what could lead to they're downfall. There's a lot of bitching on this wide wired world of ours, not that the film doesn't live up to expectations, but that it doesn't answer the questions it sets out to ask and that it's got some massive plot holes. My take, after the break. They're will be spoiler-ish bits.
So, ignoring the opening scene, we have Shaw (Noomi Rapace) and Holloway (Logan Marshall-Green, or as i will probably remember him, cut-rate Tom Hardy, damn you coming sooner), as they uncover some cave drawings that have people looking at a constellation with a giant figure. The same basic drawing has shown up in several other civilizations past they're used by date, and the logical conclusion is that its a map. So, cut several years later, on the Spaceship Prometheus, with a group of scientists from various backgrounds, as well as Weyland Corp. Representatives Vickers (Charlize Theron) and everyones robot pal, David (Michael Fassbender). So, following the co-ordinates they've gleemed from the star-map, they find a planet/moon that has some structures on it, and they go to investigate. Then as the poet say, shit went down.

Prometheus is a spectacular looking film, and it creates a very atmospheric and visual world, especially in Imax 3D.  So Cu do's to the DP and design team. Seeing this make me wonder if i might have enjoyed James Cameron's Avatar if i'd seen it on one of those massive, swallows you up screens. It really seems to engulf the senses. It's maybe a shame that the story isn't as engaging, and maybe parts of that could be rectified with a directors cut, or someone elses cut of the film.
Unfortunatly, the story is a bit flat, and things all feel a bit to 'convenient' or inconvenient at times, there are times when the characters do some typical movie things, that anyone born with the majority of they're brain intact would think to do something that might give them a better chance at survival, but its a movie, stupid things happen to build suspense.

The characters, for the most part, aren't overly developed, and to be honest, i kinda hated Marshall-Green's arrogant Holloway, who is willing to do 'anything and everything' to find what he's looking for. Really, the only two character's that get any sort of development are Shaw and David, and as a result, they're the most likable. Even then, it's only really because the film focuses so much on Shaw that we know were suppose to like her.

Fassbender is brilliant as David, playing it cold, and intrigued by the events that surround him, while having his own 'motivations' to be part of the expedition.I quite liked that Theron as Vickers aswell, although she doesn't get nearly as much screen time to be the villain type character the films seems to want to set her up to be. The rest of the cast do alright too, just not as impressive.

Prometheus is worth seeing, but doesn't really live up to the hype that the internet built up for it coming into the release, and it's not necessarily everything that the film seems to want to be.
