The Bullet Vanishes (2012)

In Breif: Set in Shanghai during the 1930's, A series of mysterious murders occur at a munition factory, the man is shot, but there's no bullet at the scene. Two Investigators, One a military hotshot climbing the ranks (Nicholas Tse), and the other a prison guard who has a penchant for proving the inmates innocents(Ching Wan Lau), embark on the case.

I get the feeling that sometimes, i'm more inclined to enjoy foreign films the those that are predominantly English. I imagine if this had been in english, i'd have said its a film i'd already seen a dozen times before that never really brings anything new to the table. But I really enjoyed this film for the most part.
The film seems to have a heavy influence from Guy Richies Sherlock Holmes films (Can't say i cared for the first one, and i think i did the smart thing and slept through the second one), with at least one particular scene that doesn't add anything to the film being lifted directly from the film. The one main difference between the films are, Neither of its leads are really playing the Watson character, they're both Holmes to varying degrees. In Scenes early on in the film, we see Wan Lau's Lei's Song himself in a 'controlled' test to prove the innocents of one of his inmates, and shortly after we see Tse's Gong chase a man on foot to a crowded hall and put together the evidence to determine which of the patrons is his suspect. Both actors bring a bit of fun to they're characters and go on to have a good repertoire throughout the film.
The Story for the most part is enjoyable, with some fairly predictable twists, although there were some last minute twists in the film (That are well setup) that feel unnecessary, and its around that point that the film starts to feel like it's going on a little too long as well. It's not perfect, but its fun enough to let you gloss over some of the films issues.

Like I said, I enjoyed this film, but as soon as i'm reading subtittles for a film, my enjoyment level seems to go up. Also, i haven't seen Nicholas Tse in a film for nearly 10 years (2004's New Police Story), Honestly, i wasn't sure who he was in the film until half way through it. Guy looks different.
