Damsels in Distress, Whit Stillman presents (2011)

In Breif: Lilly (Analeigh Tipton) transfers to Seven Oaks College, an until recently all male college, is befriended by a trio of seemingly well meaning girls, lead by Violet (Greta Gerwig). Together they navigate the up's and downs of College life, while seemingly attending only a single class (lets face it, most college films you only see the inside of a class once), while making comments about every day life and preferences.

Damsel's in Distress is a real mixed bag for me. I got a few laughs out of it, but i found myself disliking most of the characters for large sections of the film at points. Violet and her crowd largely come off like Hipster/Pixie Girls who consider themselves knowledgeable about everything but not really important. Infact, i'd say that 3 supporting characters come as the most like able, and its because of a earnest stupidity (Thor and Heather) or they're played by a easily likable actor (Adam Brody's Charlie).
The core of the story is about Lilly and Violets romantic relationships, Lilly who has a male friend who's already seeing someone, Violet who's in a relationship with someone she labels as below average intelligence and not traditionally handsome, who she claims not to be in love with, and they're relationship with Charlie. Violets side of things, is a bit grating, and as the films main lead, it's kinda detrimental to the film. Lilly is more like able for the most part, but she's relegated to the sidelines for most of the film.
The film has a few good throw away lines though, and some repeat gags normally related to characters with lower level intelligence, that somehow manage to be funnier as the film goes on. Ultimetly though, the film is kinda forgettable.
