Safety not guaranteed(2012)

In Brief: Journalist, Jeff(Jake Johnson), pitches an idea to his editor, based on a classified ad, "Wanted, someone to go back in time with, me, this is not a joke, you'll get paid after we get back. Must bring your own weapon, I've only done this once before SAFETY NOT GUARANTEED",  He recruits two interns, Darius (Aubrey Plaza) and Arnau (Karan Soni) to reasearch the job. When they get into town, Jeff strikes out in the initial interview with Kenneth (Mark Duplass), but Darius manages to get in on the plan. The mission is regret, but is it for real?

So this is different, Films have been based on true stories, on novels, on amusement rides, television series and comic books. But a classified listing? That's new. and with such a small starting point to base it on, there's a lot of room for creativity. The guy that wrote the ad, ended up being fake. But the film doesn't follow that angle completely. Kenneth believe's in what he's doing, and he's goofy about things, but he's also serious enough to sell it, and emotion in his reasoning. While Duplass didn't didn't blow me away in Your Sisters Sister, he shows a lot of depth and skill here.
Same goes for Aubrey Plaza's Darius, She's normally playing the snarky/depressed bitch. She actual get's to smile and be pleasant. She really does a great job, showing you someone who's genuinely interested in who Kenneth is, and even that hope that what he's doing is all going to pan out. It's the two of them that's the core story, her deception, and his possible delusion that helps make this film so entertaining.
But they're not the whole film, there's also the Story of Jeff, who's more or less pushing for the story so he can check in on his first girlfriend, who he's spent half his life thinking about. He spends most of the film being a jackass, but when he's alone with his ex, we see a different side of him, and Arnau, the geeky college loner who's infrequently picked on by his colleges for being the quiet virgin, and then pushed to be a bit more out going.

Safety Not Guaranteed is a great film. Honestly, i'm going to be dissapointed come award season that this won't get nominated. It's a burst of fun, intelligence and emotion.
