Anna Karenina (2012)

In Brief: Anna (Keria Knightley), while on a trip to speak with her Sister Dolly (Kelly MacDonald) about her cheating Husband (Matthew MacFadyen), when she Meets Vronsky (Aaron Taylor-Johnson). There's a Spark, and Vronsky peruses Anna, catching the attention of her politician husband (Jude Law). As they're passions Ignite, people are bound to be hurt, and forgiveness is always in question.

Joe Wright injects a tremendous amount of Style to certain parts of Anna Karenina. There are regularly scenes, especially at the start of the film, that seemingly take place in a old theatre, and using the whole theatre. It looks fantastic, and then the stage opens up to the outside environments, and it maintains the style, for awhile. But later, the film seems to abandon this, for more traditional closed sets. The absence of the theatre is really felt, and quite jarring.

The story, is interesting, and gets to be quite depressing. The cast all round give great performances, particularly Jude Law. Knightley does well with her role as well, but it's a struggle to like her character at points, especially towards the end of the film.

To be honest, I was sold on this film by the fantastic looking sets shown in the trailer, the theatre theme seemingly not used through the film, was quite disappointing, and the lack of it left me wanting more. There's a lot to get out of the film, but the question stands if its any better then the other versions that came before it.
